The Salvation Army Good Food Box

Think inside this box for healthy eating! The Community Health Centre is a participant in the Good Food Box program, offering residents the opportunity to purchase a variety of in-season fresh fruits and vegetables from local producers. It’s great news for residents who want to eat healthier and stretch their food budget. Each box is $15.00 and must be paid for by the first Friday of the month, boxes are delivered to the Community Health Centre on the second Thursday of the month for pick up. Filled with delicious and healthy food choices, The Good Food Box also includes recipes and cooking tips.

     

Cooking from the Good Food Box

In partnership with the HKPR Health Unit,  come and learn how to make simple, mouth watering recipes using all the items in the Good Food Box. Offered on the second Thursday of the month beginning in July, pre-registration is required. Sessions will include recipes, information sharing and a taste testing light lunch.

You do not have to purchase a Good Food Box to participate, pre-registration is required.

 The next session will be September 9th 10:00am and October 7th 10:00am come to one session or both!

  Emergency Food Cupboard

The Community Health Centre offers a food cupboard to provide occasional food assistance to individuals and families in times of need. The cupboard is stocked by the Food 4 All warehouse and individual donation. It is open on Thursday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:00pm at the Centre on 99 Toronto Rd, Port Hope.

Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions

Based on the Stanford University Model of Self Management and designed to help those living with chronic conditions to feel better and do more of the activities they enjoy. Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions is a six week workshop which focuses on improving an individuals ability to self-manage their chronic condition with emphasis on the importance of taking responsibility for one’s own health. Topic areas include how to manage fatigue, depression, diet and exercise. Participants will discover strategies to better manage medications and improve communications with doctors, other health care providers, family and friends.

Registration is required.

The next series begins  Tuesday September  21st – Oct. 26th  1:30-4:00pm, registration is required.

 

Getting the Most Out of Life with Diabetes

Based on the Stanford University Model of Self Management and designed to help those living with type 2 diabetes to feel better and do more of the activities they enjoy. Getting the Most Out of Life with Diabetes is a six week worshop which focuses on improving an individual’s ability to self-manage their diabetes condition with emphasis on the importance of taking responsibility for one’s own health. Topic areas include how to prevent low blood sugar, nutrition and healthy eating, skin and foot care. Participants will discover strategies to better manage medications, monitoring blood sugar and improve communications with doctors, other health care providers, family and friends.

Registration is required.

The next series begins Monday October 18th – November 22nd  1:3o-4:00pm

Living with Stroke

Living with stroke is a series of eight interactive workshops approximately two hours in lenght focusing on adjustment, coping and engagement. Designed primarly for stroke survivors who have been discharged from actue care or rehabilitation. It is appropriate for caregivers to accompany the stroke survivor and full participate in the workshop series.

Registration is required. The next series will be offered fall 2010

Walk This Way

Walk this Way is a six week, twice per week guided walk for participants over 20 years of age who do not  regularly exercise and want to gradually adopt and maintain walking as a habit. Walking is easy – it can be done almost anytime, anywhere and it’s free. This is an ideal series for those who are thinking about getting physically active or are physically active sometimes but not regularly.  Participants are provided with a free users guide, calendar and useful tips.

Registration is required.   

Cooking for One is Just no Fun!

Cooking for one is just no fun is a three week cooking series focusing on easy, economical and healthy one dish meals for one. Be prepared to participate in the kitchen, have fun, taste test and share your favourite recipes. This a series for those with all levls of cooking skills and abilities.

Registration is required.  September 16th, 23rd, 30th 10:30-noon

So what is Diabetes Cooking?

This is a three week diabetes cooking series focuing on making everyday recipes diabetes friendly. Tips on covering all the food groups in your menu plan. Be prepared to participate in the kitchen, have fun and learn lots of tricks. Of course we will be taste testing our recipes.

Registration is required. November 3rd, 10th, 17th 10:00am-noon.

  What is a healthy diet? Nutrition labels 101. Join Dietitian, Aruna Peri as she explains how to read nutrition labels on all your favourite foods. What does the % of daily value really mean? What is high in fibre or low in salt mean? You are welcome to bring in labels from the foods you commonly eat.

 Soup’s On! Hearty low fat & sodium Soups to make at home.   Join us for a hands on cooking session to make hearty soups with everyday ingredients.  The Third Thursday of the month beginning in October. We will be taste testing our soup! Come to one session or all four!

Registration is required: Thursday October 21st, 10:30-noon, Thursday November 18th 10:30-noon & Thursday December 16th 10:30-noon 

55 Alive Safe Driving series.

Renew your driving skills for Today’s Traffic. Are you worried about… entering or exiting the highway, changing lanes, passing, winter or night driving? Join us for this six hour workshop offered over two days. Sponsored in part by the Canada Safey Council and Community Care Northumberland. Workbook fee of $15.00 is to be paid at the first session.

Oh my aching back! 

Learn just how your back works, how to keep it healthy and strong. Lifting 101 & How to lift using your back. Home exercise program to help yourself. Staff from the Physiotherapy & Foot Health Centres of Northumberland will lead us throught this session. 

Registration is required: Friday September 24th 10:30-noon 

Break Through Osteoporosis

This is a three week interactive series for adults 50+ who want to learn more about bone health.  Topic areas include bone health, living with osteoporosis, safety at home, cooking and nutrition and exercise. Bring your questions we will have health care providers on site and the Area Manager from Osteoporosis Canada.

Registration is required: Wednesday November 3rd – 17th 1:30-3:30pm
